Backlinks and SEO
Backlinks, also called inlinks, inbound links, incoming links and inward links are the links that point to a webpage or a website. It is any link that is received by one web node from another web node. Most search engines use the criterion of the quantity of backlinks that a website has for judging the website’s popularity, importance and search engine ranking. This has resulted in a number of companies providing SEO services to place many inbound links to their website irrespective of the content of the original website. This is commonly known as linkspam. One of the search engine optimisation techniques is to increase the number of backlinks to a website to improve its search engine rankings. This is a model that an SEO expert might apply.
Some such methods of increasing the number of backlinks are free and easy to use. However, some methods like linkbaiting require marketing strategy and plan. When linkbaiting occurs, a number of websites link to the “baiting” website, which contains information of extreme interest for a large audience. Some of these websites use method of linkbaiting quite naturally, when they are the first to release a piece of information or gossip of a popular celebrity. However, too many backlinks to a website, more than hundred to two hundred, would result in the site being penalised and in extreme cases, being de-indexed.
